Dental Bonding

Dental bonding (a.k.a. teeth bonding) is a cosmetic dental treatment that can effectively repair a chipped, cracked, or otherwise broken tooth in order to restore proper function and appearance.

Dental bonding is also useful in treating discolored teeth, gaps between the teeth, and even lengthening a tooth to be more aligned with the rest.

The dental “bond” is made out of a composite resin that fills in where the tooth broke, chipped, or cracked and makes it look like nothing ever happened.

Dental bonding is not only helpful cosmetically it is also important for overall good oral health. Bonding can help restore proper chewing and prevents further damage that could threaten the health of the surrounding teeth.

Tooth bonding is best when used for teeth that have only minor damage and are not severely decayed. It is also best for those who are not anticipating dental whitening. Teeth that are bonded do not typically respond to whitening so if there is any interest in teeth whitening, you will want to consider having the whitening done before any dental bonding.

The procedure for dental bonding is simple and typically does not require anesthesia unless you also need a filling or if Dr. Coleman needs to take extra time to dramatically change the shape of your tooth. Local anesthesia may also be recommended if a nerve root is exposed causing pain near where the bonding is to take place.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are a cosmetic dental service we are happy to provide here at Coleman Dental in Englewood, Colorado.

Dental veneers enhance the appearance and brilliance of teeth. They consist of an ultra-thin sheet of tooth-colored porcelain or composite that is placed and cemented over the top surfaces of your teeth.

Benefits of porcelain veneers include:

  • Restoring worn, eroded tooth enamel
  • Lining up teeth that are mildly uneven
  • Repairing chips or cracks in teeth
  • Eliminating stains and other causes of discolored teeth
  • Increasing durability of the teeth
  • Minimizing gaps between teeth
  • Improving smile appearance and self-confidence
  • Reducing the need for more extensive dental treatments

Porcelain dental veneers are typically very durable and can last for many years before requiring replacement. Staying on top of routine exams and dental cleanings is important for maintaining the health of your mouth and the longevity of dental veneers and most other dental enhancements.

Caring for your dental veneers on a daily basis is extremely important. Chipped or fractured porcelain veneers cannot be repaired, so you’ll want to discuss the ultimate cost for replacement if necessary.

Teeth Whitening

While brushing and flossing daily are ways to keep your teeth healthy, teeth tend to lose their shine and “whiteness” after a while. If you feel like your smile is lacking some sparkle or your teeth are  a darker yellow than they used to be, you’re not alone. Asked what they most want to improve about their smile, 90% of patients said they’d want whiter teeth.

Teeth can lose their shine for many reasons:

  • Food and Drink – Coffee, tea, and red wine are the major staining culprits. They all include intense color pigments called chromogens that stain the white, outer part of your tooth (enamel).
  • Tobacco Use – The tar and nicotine found in cigarettes are each responsible for staining teeth a dark yellow color. Chew and other smokeless forms of tobacco are just as guilty.
  • Age – No matter how  well you care for your teeth, with time, the outer enamel layer of our teeth gets thinner with brushing and more of the yellowish dentin shows through.
  • Trauma – Being hit in the mouth or having a tooth loosened by trauma may cause the tooth to look discolored as it reacts to the injury.
  • Medications – Teeth can become discolored as a side effect of certain medications including, antihistamines, antipsychotics, and high blood pressure medications. Young children who are exposed to certain antibiotics when their teeth are forming (either in the womb or as a baby) may have discoloration of their adult teeth.
  • Chemotherapy and head and neck radiation can also discolor teeth.

Teeth whitening is a simple process and most whitening products contain one of two chemicals typically known as “tooth bleaches” (hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide). With continued use, the chemicals break stains into smaller pieces making the discoloration less noticeable and your teeth brighter.

When considering teeth whitening, talk to Dr. Coleman and her staff before deciding to invest in a teeth whitening procedure. Teeth whitening is not for everyone and treatment may not correct all types of discoloration. For example, yellow teeth typically bleach well, brown teeth may or may not respond well and teeth with gray tones may not bleach at all.

Teeth whitening also does not work on dental crowns, veneers, or fillings. It also is not effective if your tooth discoloration is caused by medications or a tooth injury.

Invisalign® (Clear Aligners)

At Coleman Dental, Dr. Coleman is proud to offer Invisalign©, a brand of clear aligners.

Also known as “invisible braces”, clear aligners such as Invisalign©, have transformed orthodontic treatments and the world of “braces”. Clear aligners are a popular alternative to their traditional metal counterparts because they are considerably less noticeable yet effectively correct crooked or misaligned teeth. They are typically a great option for adults, especially those who work professionally and do not want the appearance of metal braces.

Invisalign© and other clear aligners straighten teeth and correct uneven bites by gradually moving teeth a little bit at a time through the use of a series of custom-made clear retainers.

When getting a patient started with clear aligners, Dr. Coleman will take dental X-rays, photographs, and/or digital scans of the teeth to determine the best approach. She will then work with specific aligner software to plan the whole process, guiding teeth into healthy positions for optimal function and appearance.

Clear aligners are typically worn 22 hours a day, every day for several months. Approximately every 2 weeks a new tray of aligners will be used that gradually move the teeth into their ideal spots. Just like with traditional braces, those who get clear aligners will need to wear retainers after their teeth reach their new positions in order to maintain optimal results.

Benefits of Clear Aligners:

  • Clear and barely noticeable
  • Removable for cleaning, flossing, eating, drinking, and social situations
  • Effective with less discomfort than traditional braces
  • Easy to clean and food doesn’t get stuck in them like with traditional metal wire braces

If you would like to have straighter teeth or feel your teeth don’t align as they should, schedule an appointment with Dr. Coleman today at Coleman Dental to see if you are a candidate for clear aligner therapy with Invisalign©
