Tooth-Colored Fillings
When decay sets in and creates a weakening or defect in the tooth, a dental filling is often recommended to prevent further damage and strengthen the remaining structure.
Here at Coleman Dental we offer tooth-colored fillings to patch up areas where cavities (a.k.a. decay) have been removed and restore your tooth without the sometimes undesirable appearance of traditional fillings.
Fillings are effective, simple, and minimally invasive ways to treat dental decay and cavities. When the area of decay caused by bacteria (which feed on sugar) is removed, it is thoroughly cleaned to remove any bacteria that may be present.
Once that process is complete, soft tooth-colored material is used to fill in the now empty space. To harden the material, a bright blue light is used so that it is hard enough to chew on and function as a normal tooth.
Afterward, you can resume normal chewing and at-home hygiene. It is not uncommon for the tooth to be slightly sensitive to extreme temperatures and biting for about a week.

Extractions
Tooth extraction is the term used to describe the process of removing a tooth from the mouth. While it is our goal, here at Coleman Dental to help you maintain your natural teeth as long as possible, occasionally teeth are too damaged due to trauma or decay and need to be removed for the overall oral and general health of an individual.
Tooth extraction may be required for several reasons, including:
- Trauma – The tooth is broken due to some outside force.
- Severe tooth decay – Poor oral hygiene leads to weakened and eroded teeth.
- Impaction – Common examples are wisdom teeth or other teeth that don’t grow in properly and overcrowd the other teeth leading to pain and discomfort.
- Severe periodontal (gum) disease – Gum disease can lead to
loose teeth and may require extraction and replacement with
stronger more viable options.
We understand that extractions can sound frightening and painful but rest assured that Dr. Coleman and our team are committed to making tooth extraction a smooth and comfortable process for you or your loved one.
First, we administer pain-numbing medication to the tooth and surrounding area to make the process painless. Once it is confirmed that you are completely numb, we work gently to loosen and remove the tooth. The area is then cleaned and instructions are provided on how to ensure a smooth and problem-free recovery.
Periodontal Therapy
Periodontal therapy is a term that describes a wide range of services that focus on treating and preventing advanced gum disease. Proper periodontal care and treatment are important in maintaining the strength and proper function of your teeth because weak and diseased gums can lead to loss of teeth and bone structure.
Common periodontal therapies often involve deep cleanings, antimicrobial treatments, special prescriptions, and occasionally a referral to specialty care.
Evaluation begins with the identification and measurement of any recession of the gum line. Based on the level of periodontal disease, Dr. Coleman will develop and discuss with you a plan, both long and short to prevent further complications.
Think of your gums like the ground and soil beneath a tree. Just like a tree cannot thrive in bad soil, your teeth will not survive in toxic and diseased gums. Here at Coleman Dental, our dental hygienists specialize in periodontal therapy and deep cleanings so that your gums and bone stay healthy, ensuring long-lasting overall oral health and a beautiful, functioning smile.
